Statement - Motiva Port Arthur Power Outage

Statement #2

Monday June 2, 2008 6:00 pm

Power to the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery has been re-established after the facility lost electricity today at approximately 11 a.m.

The refinery is expected to return to full production capacity over the next couple of days.  Safety is the top priority during this process.

The refinery has a production capacity of approximately 275,000 barrels of crude oil per day.  Products will continue to be supplied from inventory that is on hand.

A ground fault malfunction in the internal electrical system caused the power failure.  As the refinery re-starts all units, flaring is possible over the next few days. The refinery is monitoring the fenceline as a precautionary measure.

All non-essential personnel were allowed to leave the facility for the day.  All are expected to report back to the refinery tomorrow.

As a precaution, five workers were taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion and other symptons, including nausea.  All have been released from the hospital.
